Logistics Breakthrough in Debrecen, HGL Group - E-Commerce

Logistics Breakthrough in Debrecen

Can you imagine how a regional airport could quickly become a key player in the international logistics network? On Tuesday, 19 November 2024, a new chapter began in the history of Debrecen Airport. Thanks to the collaboration of the HGL Group, the Hungarian government, and local authorities, it was demonstrated that the gateway to the “Cívis City” is capable of meeting the demands of global e-commerce.

At around 5 pm on 19 November, the first cargo plane from China landed at Debrecen Airport. Present for this historic moment was Paul Szeman, CEO of the HGL Group, whose organisation played a pivotal role in making this milestone a reality.

Preparation and Test Phase

The arrival of the Chinese cargo aircraft was preceded by extensive preparations. One of the initial steps of the project involved a comprehensive test, during which goods from HGL’s Budapest headquarters were used to simulate the entire process of receiving and handling cargo shipments. Following the successful test, the Chinese partner decided to designate Debrecen Airport as an “injection point” within their international distribution network.

Debrecen on the E-Commerce Map: Steps Towards Implementation

The development of the cargo operation of Debrecen Airport was not a sudden decision but the outcome of a carefully planned and phased project in which the HGL Group played a leading role. Months ago, the idea emerged to make the airport – in addition to its current passenger transportation business – a logistics centre for Hungary’s eastern region, recognising the need to expand infrastructure and capacity for e-commerce goods.

Testing: The Foundation of Success

The first step was testing logistics processes. HGL transported a high volume of goods from Budapest to Debrecen Airport to simulate a cargo shipment’s arrival and handling. Experts meticulously tested every detail during this simulation, including customs clearance, security checks, and logistical distribution. The test extended into the night, with HGL’s team working precisely to ensure that the shipments were loaded onto trucks and dispatched to end-users by morning.

Following the successful test, HGL initiated discussions with its Chinese partners. The goal was to incorporate Debrecen Airport into China’s e-commerce network as an “injection point” – a location providing direct connections between the region and global markets. Based on the test results and the airport’s geographical advantages, the Chinese partners quickly decided to launch the first cargo flight to Debrecen in November.

Regular Cargo Flights Set to Begin

The arrival of this first shipment is just the beginning. In the future, several cargo planes are expected to land weekly at Debrecen, elevating Hungary’s logistics role to a new level.

A Strategic Collaboration: Hungarian Government, Debrecen Airport, and HGL

The development of the cargo business unit of Debrecen Airport is not only a professional achievement for HGL but also a shining example of collaboration between the Hungarian government, airport management, and HGL.

Government Support

The Hungarian government recognised the strategic importance of the project and supported its implementation from the outset. The Deputy State secretary positive response to an initiative by HGL’s Managing Director Németh Csaba underlined the importance of improving infrastructure at Debrecen Airport. This ensured state entities prioritised the reception of e-commerce goods in Debrecen.

The government’s aim was to strengthen Hungary’s position as a logistics hub in Central Europe. Increasing Debrecen Airport’s cargo traffic is a key element in this vision, furthering economic development in the eastern Hungarian region.

The Role of Debrecen Airport

The management of Debrecen Airport, led by Ernő Györke, quickly recognised the opportunities the project presented. With HGL’s professional participation, the airport’s infrastructure was prepared for cargo traffic. The simulation performed in the first test shipment not only optimized the goods handling processes but proved the airport’s capability to receive and quickly handle international cargo flights.

Ernő Györke played a crucial role in bringing together the government and Chinese partners, enabling the project’s swift progress. As a result, Debrecen Airport is now one of Hungary’s most important centre for air logistics.

HGL’s Pioneering Role

From the beginning the project was driven by HGL, leveraging its expertise to lay the groundwork for receiving and processing high volume cross border e-commerce shipments arriving on full cargo flights in Debrecen. HGL coordinated the testing, identified challenges and solutions, ensuring the processes ran seamlessly.

Paul Szeman, HGL’s owner and CEO, remarked:
“This project perfectly demonstrates how collaboration between the public and private sectors can achieve remarkable results. Launching cargo flights at Debrecen Airport not only strengthens Hungary’s economy but also provides our clients with new opportunities for fast and reliable transport.”

The Importance of Cargo Flights to Debrecen

Regular cargo flights to Debrecen Airport carry strategic significance for the city and the entire eastern Hungarian region. This development opens new dimensions in logistics and the economy, directly impacting local business growth, regional competitiveness, and the dynamic expansion of e-commerce.

Supporting E-Commerce Growth

E-commerce has grown exponentially worldwide, and Hungary is no exception. Many international companies choose Hungary as their logistics base due to its many ideal advantages and qualities, for serving Central and Eastern European markets. Regular cargo flights to Debrecen allow these companies to deliver their products to customers faster and more efficiently.

These flights are particularly crucial during peak seasons like Black Friday or Christmas, when online orders surge. Rapid and reliable air transport becomes essential, as customers expect their purchases to arrive on time. Debrecen Airport’s cargo capacity helps reduce the burden on Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc Airport, improving the overall efficiency of the logistics chain.

Boosting the Local Economy

Cargo flights directly contribute to revitalising the local economy. New flights increase demand for regional logistics companies, create jobs, and strengthen the area’s economic position. As a result, Debrecen Airport is poised to become one of the most significant centre for air logistics in Central and Eastern Europe.

HGL has a prominent role in this, as the company not only helps the reception of flights but actively contributes to the development of the region’s logistics infrastructure. The successful landing and handling of the first cargo flights demonstrated that Debrecen can meet the highest shipping standards.

Connecting to the Global Market

Regular cargo flights to Debrecen offer to local and international companies direct access to the global supply chain. This is especially important for trade between East Asia and Europe, as serving Chinese markets quickly and reliably is crucial for e-commerce success.

Becoming an “injection point” means cargo flights can land directly at Debrecen Airport, bypassing unnecessary trans-shipments. This significantly reduces transportation time and costs, benefiting both business partners and end-users.

Debrecen Airport is no longer just a gateway to Hungary but a key player in the global logistics network.
