World Food Day 2024

Did you know that nearly a third of the food produced in the world never reaches the consumer? This not only represents an economic loss, but it also exacerbates the global problem of hunger. HGL, together with many other logistics companies, works every day to ensure that there are fewer hungry people in the world.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) established World Food Day in 1979 to raise awareness of the global problem of hunger and food insecurity. World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16 October.

The main aim of World Food Day is not only to improve food distribution, but also to encourage communities, businesses and governments around the world to develop sustainable agricultural practices and infrastructures for the long term. These actions are particularly needed in the countries and continents most in need, such as Africa and poorer regions of Asia, where malnutrition rates are particularly high.

The role of logistics in food supply

Logistics plays a crucial role in the global food supply chain. According to industry estimates, food accounts for 25-30% of all goods transported. The global food logistics market is expected to grow to over USD 1000 billion by 2023.

Unfortunately, this good result has a downside. According to FAO data, a significant amount of food waste – around 1.3 billion tonnes per year worldwide – is generated during the transportation process. That’s a lot, especially when you consider how many people are starving on the planet.

Logistics companies have a key role to play in solving this problem. For example, it is important for food safety that cold chain technologies are constantly evolving. This ensures that temperature-sensitive products are transported properly. Refrigerated trucks, refrigerated containers and other specialised transport solutions allow essential foodstuffs to be delivered anywhere in the world, reducing food shortages and waste.

HGL Group’s professionals are extra motivated by the knowledge that their work contributes to the well-being of people and to the health of the planet. The Group’s leaders are committed to applying new technologies and developing new ways of doing things. We believe that through our work, we can help to bring us a little closer to a world without hunger.
